2010/2011 60th Anniversary Season
25 March-3 April 2011
François-Frédéric Guy
Beethoven Piano Sonata Cycle

To celebrate the Norfolk & Norwich Music Club’s 60th anniversary season, the distinguished French pianist François-Frédéric Guy has been invited to perform the complete cycle of Beethoven Sonatas. Although the majority of these concerts will take place at the John Innes Centre, there will be two lunchtime recitals at the Assembly House.
The sonatas are rarely played as a complete cycle within the time frame of ten days and this will be a first for Norwich.
Beethoven’s piano sonatas span almost the whole of his life as a composer, from the earliest, written when he was a young man of 23, to the final three, Opus 109, 110 and 111, when he was at the height of his powers in Vienna, including along the way such well-loved masterpieces as the Pathétique, Moonlight, Waldstein, Appassionata and the Everest-like challenge of the Hammerklavier.
The greatest pianists have long regarded these works as the ultimate keyboard challenge, incorporating the widest range of human emotion and experience.
François-Frédéric Guy has performed the cycle to great acclaim in many European and American cities but this will be his first in the UK. His recordings of both the Beethoven concertos have been highly praised and he is now in the course of committing his sonata interpretations to disc.
