The Elias Quartet is one of this country’s leading ensembles, and is well known to audiences in Norwich. They are joined by the Navarra Quartet in Mendelssohn’s irrepressibly exuberant Octet – one of musical history’s greatest miracles: a perfectly achieved and highly original work composed by a boy of sixteen.
Like Beethoven, whose ‘serioso’ quartet Op.95 is the darkest and most concentrated of his works of the kind, Smetana suffered from deafness. His autobiographical Quartet No.1 looks back to the carefree world of his youth, and comes to a climax with a vivid depiction of the tinnitus which afflicted him.
